The Framework for Pricing Creator Businesses
Pricing a creator asset bridges the gap between traditional business valuation and digital audience metrics. Here is the framework professional buyers use.
The Baseline: SDE (Seller Discretionary Earnings)
For monetized assets, the baseline valuation is a multiple of Seller Discretionary Earnings. SDE is the net profit of the business plus any personal expenses or owner salary added back in.
Most creator assets sell for a multiple of 2x to 4x Annual SDE (or 24x to 48x Monthly SDE).
The Multiplier Modifiers
Once the baseline SDE is established, buyers adjust the multiple up or down based on risk and growth potential:
Adjust UP (Premium Multipliers):
- Multiple diversified revenue streams (AdSense + Merch + SaaS).
- High audience retention and email list ownership.
- Evergreen content library.
- Turnkey operations (low owner involvement required).
Adjust DOWN (Discount Multipliers):
- Single point of failure (e.g., 100% reliant on one sponsor).
- Extreme personality dependence (audience will leave if the founder leaves).
- Declining month-over-month engagement trends.
- High risk of platform demonetization or bans.
Pre-Revenue Valuations
If the asset has a large, engaged audience but is not yet monetized, it is priced based on "Audience Replacement Cost" or comparable market rates per 1,000 active followers in that specific niche.
