Evaluating Telegram Groups and Channels
Telegram communities have emerged as highly liquid assets due to their direct-to-audience push notification capabilities. However, valuing them requires careful scrutiny due to the prevalence of botting in the space.
1. View-to-Member Ratio
The most critical metric for a Telegram channel is not total members, but the average views per post. A healthy channel should see views equivalent to 15-30% of its total member base within 24 hours of posting. A channel with 100k members but only 1,000 views per post is heavily botted and nearly worthless.
2. Subscriber Acquisition Source
Buyers will want to know how the audience was built:
- Organic Search/External Traffic: Highly valuable.
- Cross-Promo (Mains): Moderately valuable.
- Forced Adds/Scraping: Extremely low value and high risk of being banned.
3. Monetization Methods
Telegram channels are typically monetized via:
- Paid pinned posts
- Affiliate marketing (crypto, betting, trading)
- Premium subscription funnels
Valuations generally fall between 8x to 15x monthly revenue, reflecting the slightly higher risk profile of the platform compared to YouTube or established email newsletters.
